Fuuta Tooro Folk Tales
by Bocar Demba Dieng

Eleven tales carried down the Senegal River valley and told here in English: the partridge who outwits an elephant, the headstrong princess who will not be told, Barka who bargains with a genie-woman, and the child whose kindness to a crocodile nearly costs him his hand. Bocar Demba Dieng gathers the stories of the Fuuta Tooro as they were told to him, keeping the cadence of the teller's voice. Written for children, so that they may discover the heritage of the Fuuta — and for adults, so that they may remember the stories of their own childhood and pass them on in turn.
