DR. JOSEPH ARDITTI is Professor of Biology Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He received his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1965, joined UCI in 1966 and retired in 2001. Professor Arditti is the author of numerous books and articles on orchids and orchid biology, including, with Robert Ernst, the first edition of Micropropagation of Orchids, the second edition (with him as sole author) of which is forthcoming from Blackwell Publishers in the UK. Orchid Biology, Reviews and Perspectives, coedited by Dr. Arditti, Dr. Kenneth Cameron and Dr. Tiiu Kull is forthcoming from the New York Botanical Garden Press. Dr. Arditti was elected Honorary Life Member of The American Orchid Society in 1976 and has received many awards for his work, including the Gold Medal of the Orchid Society of South East Asia (Singapore) in 1990. He was inspired by his love for books and his love of orchids to write Fundamentals of Orchid Biology Professor Arditti lives in California with his son Jonathan.
