Born in Columbus, Ohio, Kister backpacked 700 miles from the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay into and throughout the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 1991, and published the book Arctic Quest: Odyssey Through a Threatened Wilderness about the journey. Kister has personally lobbied numerous U.S. Representatives and Senators to protect the refuge over the last 15 years. He has studied, written and spoken about climate change for nearly 20 years. In 2000, Kister was a climate campaigner with Ozone Action (now part of Greenpeace USA), and was a delegate to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in the Hague, Netherlands in 2000. For the last seven years, Kister has traveled more than 100,000 miles throughout the United States and Canada doing more than 1,000 multi-media presentations. Kister has traveled mostly by fuel-efficient train. In 2005, Kister joined the Board of Directors of the newly formed Arctic Voices organization, and was appointed vice-chair of the non-profit. Arctic Voices will strive to show the human face of the Arctic Refuge issue through the voices of the Gwich’in people. Kister returned to the Arctic in 2005 with a video camera, and produced his first film, Caribou People, available at www.arcticrefuge.org. Mostly in the words of the Gwich’in and Inupiat peoples, the film has amazing wildlife footage and shows the threat that oil development presents to both cultures. Gwich’in say development would cause a genocide of their culture, and scientists concur that it would have a massive negative effect on the Porcupine Caribou Herd that the Gwich’in depend upon. Kister lives in Athens County, Ohio where he works locally in the progressive community to change to solar and wind energy production, mass transit and bicycle paths and lanes, locally produced organic food and sustainable, energy efficient housing.
