…I thought as I crouched at the bottom of the trench with the bedlam up above and the shells crashing all around that this was to be my end. The words of a Psalm I remembered from childhood came into my mind: “And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you . . . God in Heaven.” I said, “Protect us and take care of us.” Suddenly I knew I was not alone. I thought I felt a soothing feeling come over me. “Here I am, Lord, show me the way. I have heard you calling in the night. I will go Lord; I will take these men to safety.” A presence was with me. Strength poured through me. My faith and courage cleared my head and I stood up... “He who hesitates is lost…”
