This book was written with the hope that it will be of benefit to new substitutes as well as to schools and students. Often being on a tight budget, school districts are simply unable to offer much assistance to new substitute teachers. Numerous ideas presented in this book may help fill the void. It is actually two books in one:

SECTION A: SUBSTITUTE TRAINING MANUAL. This section offers some basic suggestions for teaching strategies. Beyond student teaching, it appears that many substitute teachers [or reserve/guest teachers as they are sometimes called] do not receive enough down-to-earth, practical training on such things as general procedures, classroom management, safety concerns, legal issues, how to motivate students, Code of Ethics, common mistakes that substitutes make and other important matters that this manual covers.

SECTION B: EMERGENCY LESSON PLANS PACKET. This packet covers material for a wide range of subjects and K-12 grade levels. It consists of motivational, high quality learning ideas for emergency plans/worksheets/forms. It offers suggestions for last minute time fillers and when, for whatever reason, no lesson plans can be found or there is not enough work to keep the students busy. Since these situations tend to occur somewhat frequently and there is often little or no time to prepare for these emergencies, the enclosed packet provides a large selection of backup plans that helps to guarantee productive learning while the regular teacher is absent.
